The Opportunity

Yau & Associates seeks an exceptional lawyer to join the firm as a Senior Associate.

This is a selective appointment within a lean and growing practice. We are looking for a lawyer who combines intellectual ability, technical excellence and commercial judgement with the maturity to manage matters responsibly and work effectively as part of a team.

The successful candidate will be entrusted with substantial responsibility, direct client exposure and a broad range of challenging work. Equally important is the ability to collaborate closely with colleagues, communicate openly and contribute positively to the continued development of the firm.

Our practice focuses on corporate and commercial matters, mergers and acquisitions, and compliance and governance. We advise a diverse range of clients, including multinational corporations, private companies, founders and investors.

What You Will Do

The successful candidate will:

  • Advise on corporate and commercial transactions, business arrangements, and compliance and governance matters.
  • Draft, review and negotiate transaction documents and commercial agreements with precision and a sound understanding of their commercial implications.
  • Analyse complex issues and provide clear, practical and commercially sensible advice.
  • Manage matters proactively, anticipate issues and ensure that deadlines and deliverables are met.
  • Work directly with clients and develop a strong understanding of their businesses, priorities and objectives.
  • Collaborate closely with partners and colleagues to deliver high-quality legal services, share knowledge and contribute to the firm's collective expertise.

We value client relationships built on trust, sound judgement and a genuine understanding of the client's business. The successful candidate should be capable of contributing meaningfully to those relationships, rather than simply completing assigned tasks.

What We Are Looking For

Applicants should have:

  • At least five years' post-qualification experience.
  • Admission as an Advocate and Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya.
  • A strong academic record.
  • Substantial experience in corporate and commercial advisory work and transactions, including mergers and acquisitions.
  • Strong technical drafting, negotiation and analytical skills.
  • The ability to manage demanding work with limited supervision while maintaining a high standard of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Sound commercial judgement and the ability to identify material risks and develop practical solutions.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to work effectively with clients, colleagues and external advisers.

Length of service alone will not be determinative. We will place significant weight on the substance and complexity of a candidate's experience, the level of responsibility assumed, the quality of the candidate's judgement and the ability to contribute effectively within a collaborative team environment.

Working at Yau & Associates

We maintain a lean and collaborative working environment where individual contributions matter.

The successful candidate will be expected to take ownership of matters, exercise sound professional judgement and manage work proactively. Equally important is the ability to communicate effectively, keep colleagues appropriately informed and involve the wider team as circumstances require.

We do not regard independence as working in isolation. We expect our lawyers to collaborate closely with colleagues, share knowledge, seek input where appropriate and contribute positively to the firm's culture and collective success. Sound judgement includes recognising when an issue would benefit from discussion, additional perspectives or escalation.

The position offers substantive responsibility, meaningful client exposure and the opportunity to work closely with experienced practitioners while contributing to the continued growth of the firm.

Remuneration

Remuneration will reflect the calibre, experience, demonstrated ability and expected contribution of the successful candidate, as well as the level of responsibility and opportunity associated with the role.

How to Apply

Please submit the following information for consideration:

  • Your curriculum vitae, including academic qualifications and a clear account of your relevant practice experience.
  • A brief covering note explaining your suitability for the role.
  • An anonymised summary of two or three significant matters, describing their complexity and your personal role and responsibility, without disclosing confidential or privileged information.
  • Your expected remuneration and notice period.
